NEPANTLA: LATIN IDENTITY AND ART IN THE SPACE BETWEEN is an Alberta Foundation For The Arts (AFFTA)-funded documentary that explores the creative lives of Latin American immigrant artists in Canada. Rooted in the Nahuatl word meaning “in-between,” Nepantla examines how identity is shaped by migration, memory, and artistic expression. Featuring artists engaged in diverse performance and visual arts, the film captures how culture evolves: not by being left behind, but by being carried, transformed, and reimagined. Through intimate storytelling and striking visuals, Nepantla is a celebration of resilience, complexity, and the power of art to bridge worlds.

Basado en la palabra náhuatl que significa “estar en medio”, Nepantla examina cómo la identidad se moldea a través de la migración, la memoria y la expresión artística. Con artistas diversos de artes escénicas y visuales, el filme muestra cómo la cultura no se abandona: se lleva consigo, se transforma y se reinventa. Angela Ambrose is a Calgary-based filmmaker and co-owner of Lunar Ring Media, a creative production company specializing in documentary storytelling. With a Master’s in Geography from the University of Calgary, her work often explores the emotional and cultural landscapes that shape people and places. In 2023, she directed Journey to Aztlán, a documentary that traces the unlikely intersection of Mexican identity and heavy metal, screened internationally at MADRIFF and the Ciudad de México International Film Festival. Angela also produces music videos and visual content rooted in narrative depth, cultural inquiry, and artistic intuition.

Marco Rojas is a Mexican-born sound designer, audio expert, and musician whose work blends technical precision with deep cultural insight. As co-owner of Lunar Ring Media and a skilled drummer, he brings a nuanced ear and lived experience to projects like Nepantla, where he serves as both sound designer and cultural context advisor. Marco’s work in Nepantla explores the emotional impact of sound while honouring the layered identities of immigrant artists.

Carla Cañarte is an audiovisual producer and screenwriter who has been involved in a variety of productions, including films, documentaries, and music videos in Ecuador. She directed and produced the short film Matriz, an official selection at the Video Talentos Festival in Spain, and Tráeme tu amor, an official selection at the Tri-Cities International Film Festival in the United States. She currently resides in Canada and is part of the local production team of Nepantla in the city of Winnipeg.
